His Excellency - NEWMAP-EIB Gombe State

His Excellency Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON
Executive Governor of Gombe State and Champion of Green Development

Since assuming office in 2019, His Excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has established himself as one of Nigeria’s leading advocates for environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and ecosystem restoration. Through visionary leadership and strategic investments in environmental governance, he has positioned Gombe State as a prominent example of green growth and climate action within Nigeria’s Sahel region, a landscape traditionally affected by desertification, land degradation, flooding, and gully erosion.

Central to this transformation is the notable Gombe Goes Green (3G) Initiative, an ambitious environmental programme committed to planting and nurturing at least one million trees annually. Beyond restoring degraded landscapes and combating desert encroachment, the initiative fosters biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, improved livelihoods, and food security by promoting economic and fruit-bearing tree species. The programme has gained national recognition and has earned Gombe State commendation for its leadership in environmental stewardship and sustainable land management.

Governor Yahaya’s administration has also prioritised large-scale investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and erosion control. Through collaborations with the Federal Government and international development partners, including the NEWMAP-EIB Programme, significant gully erosion and watershed management projects have been executed across the state. Interventions at Gombe State University–Mallam Inna, Federal College of Education (Technical), GGMC Doma, and Shehu Abubakar District have safeguarded lives and property, protected critical infrastructure, restored degraded ecosystems, and increased the resilience of vulnerable communities against climate-induced disasters.

Environmental sustainability remains a fundamental component of the Development Agenda for Gombe State (DEVAGOM). Under Governor Yahaya’s leadership, climate-smart policies have been integrated into governance, infrastructure development, natural resource management, and community engagement. The administration continues to promote sustainable urban planning, watershed restoration, renewable environmental practices, and green infrastructure that harmonise economic development with ecological preservation.

Most importantly, Gombe State’s environmental initiatives directly contribute to Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement and the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Through extensive afforestation, land restoration, sustainable ecosystem management, and climate adaptation measures, the state helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase carbon sinks, bolster climate resilience, and advance Nigeria’s transition towards a low-carbon, environmentally sustainable future.

As climate change remains a significant challenge across the Sahel and beyond, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s steadfast dedication to environmental protection, climate adaptation, and sustainable development provides a robust foundation for a greener, safer, and more prosperous Gombe State. His administration’s achievements exemplify that with visionary leadership, strategic partnerships, and active community participation, environmental challenges can be converted into opportunities for sustainable growth and intergenerational development. prosperity.
