About Us - Newmap-EIB Gombe State

The Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB) is a European
Investment Bank (EIB) donor funded Project with the aim to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion
in targeted sub-watersheds. The Project duration is Five (5) years. The project was a request by
the Federal Government of Nigeria to scale up activities implemented under the Nigeria Erosion
and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) IDA Funded.

Thus, in response to the request from the Federal Government of Nigeria, the European
Investment Bank (EIB) approved the sum of EUR175million (equivalent to US$200 Million) as
Additional Financing (AF). The EIB loan was eventually negotiated and signed on the 9th and 29th
December 2020 by both the European Investment Bank and the Federal Government of Nigeria
respectively. The EIB Loan became effective in February 2020.

The Project is to be supervised on behalf of EIB by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
The United Nation Office for Project Services (UNOPS) as part of its signed MoU, is to provide
implementation support to the Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion & Watershed project and to
assist the European Investment Bank (EIB) in ensuring compliance to the minimum guidelines
and procedures of the European Investment Bank. The project in Gombe State is being implemented by the state Project Management Unit domiciled in the State Ministry of Water, Environment and Forest Resources.

The aim is to support the Climate Adaptation process for Nigeria with capacity building on the planning, management, monitoring of watershed, erosion-related activities and disaster risk management. The overall objective is to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion and improve population livelihood in targeted watersheds in 23 states of the country including Gombe State in the context of adaptation to climate change. The project will finance investments in gully erosion control, slope stabilization, integrated watershed management and livelihoods improvement.
