Dr Shittu Whanda Ja’afaru is an environmental and development professional with extensive experience in environmental management, climate adaptation, watershed and erosion control, geospatial analysis, project coordination, and sustainable development. With a distinguished career spanning public service, environmental safeguards, research, and stakeholder engagement, he has developed expertise in environmental governance and climate resilience.
Dr Ja’afaru is a product of Government Science Secondary School, Kaltungo. He obtained his Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) in Geography from the Federal University of Technology, Yola, and then proceeded to Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, United Kingdom, where he earned a Master of Science in Instrumental Analytical Sciences, specialising in Environmental Analysis. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Contaminated Land Management from the University of Nottingham, also in the United Kingdom. He has attended several professional training programmes and earned certifications in environmental management, watershed management, climate adaptation, GIS, peacebuilding, and project management.
Dr Ja’afaru has extensive academic and professional expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), environmental safeguards, watershed management, climate resilience, environmental impact assessment, natural resource management, and community-based development. His work is driven by a strong commitment to addressing environmental degradation, land-use conflicts, gully erosion, flooding, and ecosystem vulnerability through evidence-based planning and sustainable interventions.
Professionally, Dr Ja’afaru has played significant leadership and technical roles in implementing major environmental and climate resilience programmes, particularly under the Nigeria Climate Adaptation–Erosion and Watershed Management initiatives (NEWMAP-WB, ACReSAL, and NEWMAP-EIB frameworks). He has contributed extensively to the planning, implementation, supervision, and monitoring of projects to mitigate environmental degradation, improve watershed stability, restore ecosystems, and strengthen climate adaptation mechanisms in vulnerable communities.
His expertise includes the preparation and implementation of Environmental and Social Safeguard Instruments, including Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs), Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs), Catchment Management Plans (CMPs), stakeholder engagement strategies, and community consultation frameworks, in line with international development standards and donor requirements, including those of multilateral institutions.
As a geospatial analyst and researcher, Dr Ja’afaru has contributed to scholarly and applied research on environmental sustainability, GIS applications, land-use planning, wetland management, oil-spill vulnerability assessment, and conflict-sensitive natural resource governance. His research outputs reflect a multidisciplinary approach to solving complex environmental and social challenges affecting communities in Nigeria and beyond.
Dr Ja’afaru is widely recognised for his strong capacity in project management, institutional coordination, stakeholder engagement, policy advisory, environmental compliance, and community mobilisation.
