…Federal College of Education (Technical) Gombe SUG Engages NEWMAP-EIB on Student-Led Green Initiative

The Executive Council of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Gombe, paid a strategic courtesy visit to the Gombe State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP-EIB). The purpose of the visit was to foster a collaborative relationship between the academic institution and the project, with a focus on advancing sustainable environmental practices and student engagement.

The student delegation was led by the SUG President, Comrade Abubakar Haruna Muhammad. In his opening remarks, Comrade Muhammad commended NEWMAP-EIB for its significant contributions to environmental restoration, erosion control, and flood management within Gombe State, noting the tangible benefits these interventions have brought to the College community.

The primary agenda was to formally introduce the SUG’s flagship environmental sustainability project: the “1000 Date Palm Seed Planting Project.” The Union leadership presented this initiative as a proactive measure to combat land degradation and promote a greener campus and community. They specifically sought technical guidance and a potential partnership with NEWMAP-EIB to ensure the project’s success, leveraging the agency’s expertise in land restoration.

The Project Coordinator, Dr. Shitu Whanda Ja’afaru, received the delegation warmly. He praised the SUG executives for their leadership and forward-thinking approach, describing the visit as both timely and essential. Dr. Ja’afaru emphasized the critical role of youth and academic institutions in driving sustainable environmental change.

He assured the students that under the guidance of His excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, NEWMAP-EIB is committed to supporting such grassroots initiatives, pledging to provide the necessary technical advice and explore avenues for collaborative support for the 1000 Date Palm project.

The meeting concluded on a highly optimistic note, with both parties expressing a strong commitment to establishing a formal partnership.

This courtesy visit marks a significant step in bridging institutional environmental efforts with student-led activism. The proposed partnership between the FCET Gombe SUG and NEWMAP-EIB stands to create a powerful synergy, enhancing ecological resilience while fostering a new generation of environmental stewards in Gombe State.
